Early life

Just two people…

Cody and I knew each other long before we went on our first date. Our families knew each other since our dads were kids, with them growing up in the same community, having family members that were farmers and knew each other through the farming community.

We first knew each other through 4-H. We both showed cattle and we camped next to each other for over 10 years. Cody is 6 years older than me, so our first memories of each other are very different. I remember Cody as a funny, kind, good, life of the party kind of guy. He was always laughing and making people laugh, always lending a hand and working hard, and like I said, the life of the party. Cody’s first memory of me? “bowl cut Bethanie” 😑 Why, you may ask, did he think of me in this way? I always hated having my hair messed with as a child. So much so, that in third grade when I asked my mom if I could get my hair cut short (basically a pixie cut) and cut the back where I could “spike” it or put “duck tails” in it, she obliged my independence. Unfortunately, since I hated having my hair messed with, I was also rather lazy when it came to styling my hair, so… I looked like a little boy. Apparently, a little boy with a bowl cut, LOL.

Thankfully, I grew out the bowl cut. Cody and his sister had both been out of 4-H for a couple years, when one night Cody was at a wedding with my sister and brother-in-law, who was in the same class as Cody. My sister had the idea that I should go on a date with Cody, and my brother-in-law thought this was a great idea as well. I think Cody had to be persuaded, after all, I was “bowl cut Bethanie” and he still thought of me as a little girl. But, thanks to those two people, we have the life we have today. We went on a date, and the rest is history.

Our first winter together, 2014.

Life is better with a Dog

Bringing home Drake

Cody brought Drake home in November 2015. I remember going to his parents’ house, it was raining so when I walked through the door I was cleaning water off my glasses. I saw him walk around the corner but just his silhouette since I didn’t have my glasses on, and when I put them back on I saw the cutest little puppy in his arms. I may or may not have cried (I am almost 100% sure I did though) and that was one of the best surprises he has ever given me! Drake was his dog and still is, even though he would rather be inside than outside and was not much of a duck hunter (his main purpose in life) the few times he actually got to go hunting. When Drake was a year or so old Cody got some dove wings from a friend and kept them in the freezer to use for fetch and practice with Drake. He didn’t want to pick them up because he didn’t like the texture of the feathers and picked them up with as little in his mouth as possible. Needless to say, Drake has lived a life of luxury and companionship from the comfort of the house and running around at the farm enjoying life whenever he wants to, going back inside when he is too tired, bored, hot or cold to be outside.

This was either the day Cody brought Drake home, or soon after. 2015.
Drake was even in our engagement pictures! 2016.
